Boston Housing Authority sends out eviction notices to residents about to be displaced.

May 20, 1939

The BHA sends the notices to more than 3,700 families who will be forced out of some 4,700 units of housing that will be demolished in order to build 5,000 new units in the Lenox, Mission Main, Old Colony and Charlestown housing developments. Although the agency later claims that 90% of the families accepted assistance in finding new places to live, according to Lawrence Vale, “in most cases, the BHA provided little more than lists of vacancies.”
